About Pilates

Pilates is a fantastic, low-impact way to build strength, improve flexibility, and focus on core stability—all through controlled movements. It’s great for easing back pain, improving posture, and boosting balance, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting. Plus, Pilates promotes a strong mind-body connection, helping to reduce stress and bring a sense of calm. Adaptable for all fitness levels, it’s a go-to workout for anyone wanting a well-rounded, feel-good approach to fitness.

History of Pilates

Pilates was founded by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer, in the early 20th century. Originally called “Contrology,” his method combined elements of yoga, martial arts, and other forms of exercise to create a system focused on controlled movements, core strength, and breathing. Joseph developed Pilates during World War I while he was in an internment camp, where he used it to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. After moving to New York in the 1920s, he and his wife Clara opened a studio that attracted dancers and athletes, and from there, Pilates gradually grew into the popular exercise method known today.
